I've never really read a book like this before. It caught my attention at first because it talks of taking rough situations and making them positive. I live in a very poverty-stricken part of the United States. I'm constantly seeing struggles of individuals in my area and often feel like I don't have the right words to create the inspiration and motivation they need in order to bring themselves up for very poor situations. After reading this book and looking into the insights of a person who has gone through many negatives in their life, I can honestly say that his words will help create positives. I've recommended this book to many friends in my area who seem to be going through many of the same issues he's faced. He stresses 'choices'. A main concept throughout the entire book. And I believe that such a concept can change the world.
There are a few parts of his story that I felt he left vaguely described (as one reviewer mentioned). But I believe he did this mainly for personal reasons, as he goes in depth about other issues. I don't mind the empty parts and believe that the other parts of the book make up for the lost connections.
Overall this book is 'inspirational', but I think only a select group of people can truly relate to it. If you haven't come from or are in a very hopeless situation then this isn't the kind of inspirational book you're looking for. It's not 100% uplifting, but it's honest. And it's straight forward. And it gives people who are truly stuck the words they need to feel empowered. And in low-income parts of the US and the world for that matter, I feel this author's words will touch lives.

I purchased this book for someone else as a gift to inspire, encourage and motivate them. They really enjoyed the reading and said it has given them in-site and encouragement. Would recommend it to others
I admire Chuck for what he did and how he handled his mistakes. Very few people ever learn the lesson he learned
Great insights from a guy who made some big mistakes in his past and did not try to blame it on someone else. This book is a great read for anyone needing to learn about business ethics.
I bought this book for my son to read while he was in jail. Unfortunately I don't know if he will ever read it, but I did. Everything this guys says is so right on. I feel that they should make this a reading requirement in high schools. I wish I could make my son read it but I can't. I did and I am so moved by what he says that I often found my self quoting him to my husband while reading it. It will appeal to anyone who has faced adversity. READ IT!
Second Chances-Transforming Adversity into Opportunity, written by Chuck Gallagher is a sensational book. It strikes many different emotions to his readers and I personally was a bit conflicted. On the one hand I agreed with most of it and on the other hand, I didn't. Nevertheless, it was a powerful book.
Mr. Gallagher doesn't hold back that he was a convicted felon due to embezzling money. However, he takes you through the book explaining why he did it, when he got caught, his prison sentence, and more. He left behind a wife and two children due to the nature of his actions or I should say consequences. While he reflects on his past, it certainly makes you think of your own and how to possibly make better choices for a better future. Isn't that what this book is all about?
From a critical thinking perspective, his message is definitely clear. Mr. Gallagher wants to help people and motivate them to do the best they can with the hand they were dealt, or that they made themselves. Unfortunately, some people are way too impatient and try to take an easy way out.
He’s right in that this society is a fast-paced, gratitude now society. Everyone in this community wants things and they want it now, regardless of how much they should really take the time to wait and plant the seeds to what they want. If you don’t plant the seeds, you can’t watch something grow! People forget it takes hard work to reach success and Chuck Gallagher reminds you of that. Of course, his version of “success” is probably what most people should realize, instead of focusing on material objects, but again we are a fast paced, greedy culture focused solely on physical possessions.
Another thing that I personally liked in his book was the following phrase “You made a mistake but YOU are not a mistake.” That’s a quote that should be in many people’s minds for he is right in that sometimes we do build our own “prisons.” It is ultimately up to us, to break free as he has mentioned several times in his book, and we all do have these capabilities. People will either realize this or not.
Chuck Gallagher’s book was definitely successful, but certain areas he will need to touch up on. In some areas, his book felt a bit too preachy. I’m not opposed to religion although I do identify as an atheist. In other areas the grammar was a bit lax. The grammatical errors weren't enough to detract from the overall book and most books have grammatical errors anyway, so pointing it out seems kind of moot. Still, it was definitely a motivational read even if some things mentioned, I’m still questioning. One thing is for sure, we all do have consequences to our actions, so let’s try to make the world a better place, one book at a time!
I really enjoyed this book for multiple reasons, from the inner narrative look at one man's journey towards being a better man to the blue print-esque guide to changing life's struggles into opportunity. Mr. Gallagher forms "Second Chances Transforming Adversity Into Opportunity" with heartfelt writing that draws you into his life from the high point to the lowest point and then back around again to a newly changed life that truly begins to be lived. The writing is wonderfully evocative, pulling emotion from you as the author's journey unfolds. It takes unexpected turns that bring into focus the ways to change who we are and what we do -- taking our personal failings and failures, and turning them into something we can be proud of and be better for.
The book is wonderfully detailed in not only helping to provide readers with the understanding of just how to change "adversity into opportunity", but gives you hope of actually doing so by seeing Chuck Gallagher go from a personal low in prison to a personal high at being a voice of change and inspiration. I had such a good time reading this and I actually learned a great deal from it as well; it's informative, emotional, life-changing and profoundly engaging.
