Slip is simply liquid clay which can be used for decoration on its own or covered with glaze. This book examines the many techniques of using slips such as brushing, dipping, trailing and sgraffito amongst others, and uses contemporary potters' work as illustrations. It explains how to make up slips and engobes, as well as ways of using them at higher temperatures, both with and without glazes. The book is illustrated with working potters in action, showing their own personal styles and how they have adapted traditional methods to suit their work today in a modern context. As well as examples of techniques, there are many images of beautiful finished pieces to show what can be achieved.

Always good to have another reference book in your library. Not really every information in it, but no regret to have this item. Good to have a book explains someone actually using clay slip their work with photos. but do not expect too much.
Nice addition to the library of any potter or student. Contains a lot of good information about both new and old methods of decorating with slips.
A wonderful overview of a variety of slip decorating approaches and techniques. However, I was very disappointed with the glaze recipes. This is a book from the UK, and a majority of the recipes use one or more of the following manganese dioxide, vanadium pentoxide, barium carbonate, lead bisilicate or lead sesquisilicate.

I am a hobbiest and am stuck with an electric kiln, and love the ceramic glazes that come out of reduction kilns. I was hoping this book would get me inspired to create surface interest using slips in oxidation, but it didn't. If I had seen this on the shelf at a bookstore, I would have passed on it.
I would have been less dissappointed if there was a gallery section of the book. I think this is one of the few ceramic books that I have bought that doesn't have a gallery section. Instead there are a few images from each of the artists featured.

The descriptions of the ways a potter can use slip to enhance a piece are brief but adequate. Gives you lots of ideas to try without a large investment or elaborate set up. Would recommend for someone wanting to enlarge their ability to decorate ceramic pieces without going glaze crazy.
